- [S23] TROVE, The Cornwall Chronicle (Launceston, Tas. : 1835 - 1880) Wed 11 Mar 1857, Christina Kerr v. Charles Marion Crookes [sic] - This information was a demand for £15 for wages due to the complainant, as housemaid at the Club Hotel, since the 6th of May last. Defendant admitted that he was indebted to complainant in that sum, but stated that he was only one of three partners conducting the Club Hotel at the time, the other two being Messrs. Alexander and Henry Thompson. The license was taken out in defendant's name, and he was to have one third the profits of the hotel. He was willing to pay the amount claimed, but was prevented, by Mr. Alexander Thompson having forbidden those persons indebted to the Club Hotel, from paying any monies to defendant, who was consequently unable to pay wages to the servants. He had never had any settlement with Mr. Thompson, nor had be applied for any. Mr. Thompson had
paid the wages of some of the other servants, but not those of the complainant, who admitted that she had not applied to Mr. Thompson for payment.
The Bench awarded the full amount claimed, and directed defendant to pay it into Court by Friday next.
Defendant said in that case, he must declare himself insolvent, as he bad no means of paying the amount. - [S23] TROVE, Launceston Examiner (Tas. : 1842 - 1899) Sat 3 Dec 1864, Launceston Annual Licensing Meeting - Renewals of Town Licences - Charles Maryon Crooks, London Tavern, St. John and Cameron-streets. - [S23] TROVE, Launceston Examiner (Tas. : 1842 - 1899) Sat 16 Sep 1865, Breach of Licensed Victuallers' Act. - Charles Maryon Crooks, landlord of the "London Hotel," was charged by James O'Connor, Superintendent of Police, with having committed a breach of the Licensed Victtuallers' Act, in not having conducted his licensed house in a peaceable and quiet manner. It appears that some dispute took place in defendant's house early on the morning of the 9th inst, out of which this complaint arose. The Bench fined defendant 40s. and costs, 7s. 6d.
- [S23] TROVE, Launceston Examiner (Tas. : 1842 - 1899) Sat 2 Dec 1865, Charles Maryon Crooks, London Tavern, Cameron and St. John.streets. The Police Magistrate said he must most decidedly object to this application. The house was dirty and badly kept; there was great irregularity; there were complaints of the house being kept open all night, and reports of prostitutes frequenting it, and altogether there was not a worse conducted house in town. Mr. Rocher appeared in support of the application. He said the house, on account of its proximity to the Police Office, and municipal buildings, was in a position where stricter surveillance could be exercised than on any other house in town, and yet there had only been one conviction during the year. Then frequently there were entertainments going on at the Mechanics' Institute and Town Hall, and Mr Crooks could not help persons coming from those entertainments to his house. As for the reports respecting persons of bad character frequenting the house, why had not informatlons been laid against Mr. Crooks? for the Police Act was stringent enough. If the house was badly conducted it was the fault of the police. After some further remarks, Mr. Rocher appealed through the Chairman to the Superintendent of Police as to the manner in which the house was conducted. The Superintendent of Police said he could fully bear out what Mr. Gunn had stated. The Police Magistrate, referring to Mr.Rocher's remarks respecting the house being close to the Police Office, said that the Police Office closed at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, whilst the irregularities took place at night. The licence was refused. Mr. Rocher submitted that evidence should be given of the irregularities mentioned: a mere report or complaint was not sufficient. The Chairman said this had never been the practice here.
----------------------------
[At the end of the meeting] Mr. Rocher now requested the Magistrates to reconsider the application: of Mr. C. M. Crooks. He observed that the Mayor was present, and as the chief magistrate of the town he (Mr. Rocher) contended that applications for licences or complaints against holders of licences in the town came under the cognizance of Mr. Douglas and not of Mr. Gunn, and therefore he requested that the application might be reconsidered. The Bench having decided that the [illegible] be reconsidered, Mr. Rocher again urged the granting of the application. Mr. Gunn said he had been Police Magistrate here for many years. During the last few years there had been a Mayor or chief Magistrate of the town, but the duties referred to by Mr.Rocher always devolved upon him (Mr.Gunn), though he had not the slightest objection to be relieved of them. The Mayor was not present when a few minutes ago the licence was refused, but that gentleman was present with him when he went to the house, and he was sure Mr. Douglas could not help saying that the house was not in a creditable state, and he must also be aware of the police reports against it. The Mayor said he visited the house in company with the Police Magistrate, and certainly it was not so cleanly kept as most of the others in the town. As regarded the reports against the house, he might state that a report of all that was going on in the town was regularly laid before the Mayor every morning, and this house had been reported sometimes. But still he thought there was not sufficient cause to warrant the magistrates in refusing the license. Something stronger should be shown. The application was then granted by a majority of votes. The meeting separated a few minutes before 12 o'clock. - [S23] TROVE, Launceston Examiner (Tas. : 1842 - 1899) Tue 5 Nov 1867, QUARTERLY LICENSING MEETING. The Coroner (Mr. E. Whitfeld) held an inquest yesterday afternoon touching the death of William Kerslake, aged 55, a pastrycook, who was found hanging in the shed at the rear of his residence, on Sunday night. The evidence showed that the deceased left the house at 9 o'clock on Sunday morning. His absence from dinner did not cause much family concern, as they thought that he had gone out of town for the day. When he had not returned by dark a search party was sent for him, and at about 9.30 p.m. his son found his body hanging in the shed. The body was cut down, and taken to Dr. Thompson, who pronounced life extinct. The evidence given by the son went to show that his father had not been in very good health of late, but had not made any threats in regard to the taking of his own life. The Coroner returned a verdict of suicide.

- [S23] TROVE, Hobart Mercury 10 May 1939, Robinson-Crooks
At St. John's Church, Launceston, recently, Joan Crooks, eldest daughter of Mrs. L. J. Crooks, of Frederick St., Launceston, was married to Keith Robinson, only son of Mr. and Mrs. S. R. Robinson, of Ravenswood Rd., Launceston. The church had been decorated in mixed flowers in pink and bronze tonings by friends of the bride, and the Rev. F. H. Lansdell performed the ceremony. The bride was given away by her brother, Mr. L. Crooks, and during the signing of the register Mr. R. Stewart sang the solo, "Because". Mr. A. R. Gee was organist. Cut on simple lines, the bridal gown of ivory needle-run lace was mounted on taffeta. The full skirt fell into a long train and the softly draped bodice had a V neckline and short sleeves gathered up the centre. From a coronet of orange blossom and pearls fell the bride's veil of cut edge tulle, and with it was worn a smaller veil of point lace, the gift of the bridegroom's mother. Her shower bouquet was of white gladioli and begonias. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Peggy Crooks, as bridesmaid. The latter's frock of cy clamen shot taffeta was made with a very full skirt, finished at the waist with a toning sash of ribbon velvet; the high neckline had a pointed collar and the sleeves were short and full; she carried a shower of Autumn hued chrysanthemums and begonias, and wore matching flowers in her hair. Mr. W. D. Boatwright was best man. The wedding breakfast was held at the National Cafe. Mrs. Crooks wore a hip-length fur coat over her frock of Burgundy coloured lace, and her velour hat was in the same shade; she carried a small shower of mixed flowers in the same toning as her frock. Mrs. Robinson wore with her black lace frock a white fur coat and black hat, and carried a posy of red roses. The honeymoon is being spent on the East Coast. The bride travelled in a teal-blue tailored coat accompanied by a fur cape and teal blue hat and London tan accessories. Mr. and Mrs. Robinson will live at Newstead. - [S6] Papers - Helen Thomas nee Crooks - AC Cousin, Descendants of W. V. Tolson
