- [S23] TROVE, Queanbeyan Age (NSW : 1867 - 1904) Thu 23 Dec 1869, A MISERABLE DEATH- Last Saturday, Peter McIntyre, an old man employed as shepherd at Lanyon, accompanied by his son Archibald McIntyre, and a man named Shirley, having been into town, returned homewards so intoxicated that the old man fell several times from his saddle. A short distance beyond Woden they resolved upon stopping for the night, and for that purpose made a fire and lay down. 'l'hey had two bottles of rum with them to which they helped themselves. In the morning they had lost their horses, and search was made for them, the old man and Shirley being left at the camp. All day, under the heat of a burning sun old McIntyre lay exposed and drunk, until about 2 p m., when he was found in a dying state by his son, and he shortly afterwards expired. An inquest was held, and the jury returned a verdict that the deceased came to his death from the combined effect of intoxication, falls from his horse, and exposure to the heat of the sun.

- [S23] TROVE, Ovens and Murray Advertiser (Beechworth, Vic. : 1855 - 1918) Sat 18 Feb 1865, Death of a Waterloo Veteran.— There died in the Beechworth Benevolent Asylum, yesterday, an old soldier named Drummond, who fought as a British soldier on the glorious day of Waterloo. He was very old, but gave, some years since when not in too good circumstances, one of the most touching instances of love of his old profession we ever remember to have heard. After the taking of Sebastopol, he made over his pension to the widows and orphans of the soldiers who fell in the Crimea. When he stood in a square at Waterloo against which the hosts of French cavalry broke like waves upon iron-bound shore he did not do a more heroic deed than on the day when he made his small but princely gift. A man cannot give more than all he possesses.

- [S23] TROVE, The Hobart Mercury Tue 5 Sep 1893., Another old and well-known resident has passed away in the person of Mr. Henry Thomas Ayton [sic] Murray, who died to-night at his residence, Tamar-street. Mr. Murray was a native of England, but came out to this colony when a young man. He was placed on the Commission of the Peace in 1851, and on August 1,1856, while resident at Circular Head, was appointed by Sir Henry Fox Young, as Police Magistrate of the police district of Horton. Stanley was his headquarters but he had to visit Table Cape and Emu Bay, and was also Commissioner of Courts of Requests at Circular Head and Emu Bay, and Customs officer in charge of the whole line of coast from Badger Head to Cape Grim. Alter being about 10 years in charge of the Horton district, Mr. Murray was transferred to the Police Magistracy for the Port Sorell district, the headquarters of which were at Torquay. He had to visit Latrobe, the Forth, and occasionally the Leven, and it was some years before he was relieved of his duties as Customs officer, which did not fit in well with those of a Police Magistrate who had so much travelling about to do. He remained at the Mersey for about 13 years, and on May 1,1880, was appointed Police Magistrate for Selby and removed to Launceston, where he also discharged the duties of Commissioner of the £10 Court of Requests as far back as 1883. Mr. Murray was not in the enjoyment of good health, and in May of that year the Government decided to grant him six months leave of absence from July 1, so that at the end of 1883 he retired from the public service, when there were only two Police Magistrates who could show in the colony longer terms of unbroken service, viz., Messrs. W. Tarleton and Edward Innes. Since his retirement Mr. Murray has lived quietly in Launceston. His health had not been at all good of late, and on Saturday he took a sudden turn for the worse, and gradually sank till he died this evening. During his official career it was recognised that no more scrupulously conscientious magistrate had ever filled the position, and his constant desire that justice should be administered to the best of his ability, with strict impartiality, was fully appreciated. He leaves a widow and grown up family.
